Last week I was having dinner with a friend of mine, and she asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks, and has been ringing in my head since!
Her question was: where did you add value today to someone in your network? I immediately started to share with her work I was doing with some clients that day but she halted my flow with the clarification that she was not talking about clients or any staff!
Suddenly, it wasn’t so easy to answer and I was scrambling around trying to come up with a good response. Truthfully, on that day I could not give an example.
That really bothered me as I talk and write about not being selfish, reaching out and all that good stuff. But when asked what I had done THAT DAY – and not for a client or a staff member – I came up very short!!
Since that day, I have determined that an objective for me is that I will reach out to one person every day to offer support and help – with zero expectation of any reciprocation! I now ask myself that question in my journal every day – just to keep me on track.
So, now I ask you the question – where did you add value today to someone in your network that is not a client or a staff member? If you can demonstrate where you did, then good on you and keep doing it.
But, if like me, the answer was nowhere, then what are you going to do today to change that?
Some food for thought!
