An old mentor of mine, who is a successful businessman, always says that the value of your business is the ROI you get from developing your people.
That comment came back to me when reading Richard Hackman’s book “Leading Teams” that I mentioned a couple of weeks ago.
One of his 5 conditions that are necessary to have a high performing team is to have expert coaching, and coaching delivered by the leader is fundamental to developing talent.
I truly believe that coaching is about facilitating your people to create new possibilities and opportunities for themselves.
If you are not creating that environment, then I believe you are failing as a leader.
Leaders must coach – as well as manage. But your people will not be in an environment to create those new possibilities if you just manage.
Coaching ensures commitment to goals. Managing will, at best, ensure compliance – and compliance is setting the bar very low!
If you are just “managing” your people’s goals then really all you are doing is keeping score! There is no growth or development – it is stick or carrot!
Developing that coaching environment demands that continuous feedback exists – both ways! This allows for a process of continuous improvement – a sure pathway to success.
