That is a belief of today’s guest, William Chivers, President & CEO RUSH Construction in Titusville, Florida. William was voted Business Leader of the Year in 2017 for his region which is quite the achievement.
William’s story and the story of RUSH Construction is a fascinating one. RUSH itself was founded by Ed Rabel who was born in Cuba but had to move with his family in 1962 due to political changes in Cuba.
Ed came to Florida when Disney was building Epcot and decided in 1984 to set up RUSH Construction as he did not want to move back north when the work on Epcot finished.
William was, in 1997, invited to join RUSH and 2 years later became President, which, William says, was a big challenge as Ed’s shoes were indeed big to fill.
One of the fascinating aspects of RUSH is the transfer to being owner owned to being employee-owned and you really must listen to William talk about that here.
William talks about how seriously he takes the responsibility of having 35 people relying upon RUSH for their livelihood and this shapes the decisions he makes – where he truly lives up to his mantra of being a “servant leader”.
This concept of servant leader is fundamental to how William operates as CEO along with his belief that “you can never do wrong by doing the right thing”.
I highly recommend to everyone to listen to William talk about the benefits of the employee-owned scheme, and one of many he highlights is that it causes people to think differently about the decisions they make. For anyone reflecting upon going down this road, William’s comments are very insightful.
William’s book recommendations include the Bible, for personal reflection and direction, and for business he recommends Traction by Gino Wickman.
A daily ritual which William shares, which I think is wonderful, is that he makes a point of checking in personally with each member of staff every morning. That, to me, says a lot about William!
