Podcast #53: Networking and Handshakin with Matt Holmes

If you want to know about networking, relationship management and mentoring then Matt “Handshaking” Holmes is your man!

Matt hails from Denver, Colorado and is the founder of the Handshaking Video Series on www.handshakin.com. This is where Matt interviews highly successful people on the whole subject of building your network.

As you can gather from the name, Matt is a fan of face to face contact, where the handshake is the foundation of that relationship.

Matt has interviewed some really well known people, such as, David Cohen, the Founder of Techstars, John Paul Dejoria, founder of Paul Mitchell and also, Steve Pearse, the US Senator.

The lesson from john Paul was all about “paying it forward” – you don’t wait to be successful to help others, you do it from day one! The principle of the more you give, the more you get – and it works!

David Cohen reminds us that networking is a two way street – far too often the approach is much more “what’s in it for me”. Never the basis for a lasting relationship!

Matt also highlights that when it comes to networking it is more about the quality and not the quantity, and the focus has to be on mining that smaller number of quality contacts – always paying it forward.

Matt’s book recommendation is the classic: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

You can find out more about Matt at www.handshakin.com or on Twitter @handshakin.
