How Can I Be A More Inspiring Leader?

Inspiring Leader

Becoming a more inspiring leader is a continuous challenge for all of us. Very often we only think of leaders in the context of business or politics, which is limiting.

We are all leaders – in our families, our homes, our communities – and we have to take responsibility for that. Real leadership does not come with a title or a role. Truly, it comes from within.

A leader who does not inspire is not a leader at all.

So how do we become inspirational leaders? Well, let’s get one belief out of the way – it is not a question of “you either have it or not”! You must consciously focus and work on it to become inspirational – do not leave it to chance or nature.

One of the key ingredients to become a more inspiring leader is to be conscious of your presence!

What do I mean by that?

I define “presence” as your ability to be fully engaged and invested in this moment. You are totally there – completely involved the NOW!

Once you are fully engaged in this moment, your focus is totally on what you are doing, who you are with and what is being discussed. You are there 100% – all of you, fully invested in that moment.

Why is that so important? It is a clear demonstration of your commitment to that person, that conversation, that situation. It is a statement of your interest, empathy and respect for that person, that situation.

We are all inspired by people who demonstrate those qualities – commitment, passion, empathy and respect.

So, what is the impact of a lack of presence?

How do you feel when you are talking to someone and you see it in their eyes that they are gone somewhere else? How do you feel when someone is talking to you and texting at the same time?

You know when someone is not fully present – you feel it deep down. It cannot be faked.  And, guess what? It makes you feel bad. Can you be inspired by someone who makes you feel bad? Not at all!

Being present is contagious. If you are present, fully and totally, the chances are very high that the other person will be too. If you are not present, then others won’t be either. Why should they?

You decide how present and engaged you are.

Check in with yourself regularly during the day. On a scale of 1 – 10 how present am I in this moment? If you are down at a 3 or 4, what will that do to the relationship with the person you are dealing with? Not much. Then charge yourself up.

If you are not up around a 7/8 you are not present at all, and you will be pretty uninspiring.
