To conclude my take on Richard Hackman’s “Leading Teams” and his fifth condition for a high performance team, I am talking about the supportive organisation.
What do we mean by a supportive organisation? To my mind, a supportive organisation is one where there is a culture of innovation, trying new things and an absence of fear of getting it wrong.
In an organisation where the pervading sentiment is not to get it wrong, then everyone plays safe – and innovation will never flourish.
So, by definition then, a supportive organisation is one filled with confidence and an atmosphere of “give it a go”.
To my mind the following 3 elements are critical in creating that culture:
- Tell your people what you want as deliverables. Be really clear and really specific, not just about the outcomes, but also about the high standard of performance and quality you require.
- Make sure they have all the support they need to deliver on the objectives. Be that information, research, materials etc.
- Give regular and continuous feedback. Be sure to make feedback a regular event – both positive and negative. Don’t wait until the end – it’s too late then!
At the core of all of this is trust, which is the foundation of any team.
