Negative Feedback Can Be So Positive

The statement that “negative feedback can be so positive” is not simply an opinion of mine that I am sharing. It is actually the result of research done by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman who partner in a leading leadership development consultancy.

This is interesting when you consider that most managers and leaders that you meet openly admit hating it when they have to give negative feedback! In fact giving feedback – either positive or negative – is not done often enough at all!

The research becomes even more interesting when respondents were asked if they would prefer praise/positive or corrective/negative feedback.

The answer was a surprise – 57% preferred corrective feedback!

The research went on to highlight that 72% of the respondents maintained that their performance would most definitely improve if they got corrective feedback from their managers.

So, the very thing we avoid doing can have the most dramatic positive response.

Obviously, all of this hinges on how well you give the feedback, but the message is clear – giving feedback is fundamental to improved performance and as managers and leaders we are shirking our responsibility if we fail to do that consistently.
