Do you want to know what employees complain about most when they are talking about their leaders?

Well, Interact/Harris did a poll and the findings are quite revealing. Just have a look at these stats:

What strikes me immediately is that all of these are so simple to put right! 

And what is our excuse for not doing these things? Well, we are just too busy doing important stuff, aren’t we? 

After all, who else is spending time on reflecting on strategy, having meetings and entertaining clients? 

Are they not important? Well, yes, of course they are. But what is the impact on the business if we do all those things, and then neglect to connect our people to that very same vision, mission and values? 

As leaders we are only as good as the people we have around us – and I am not talking just about the top team. We will only get to buy in to the vision and strategy if we connect! 

And connection is not achieved through left brained activity – no powerpoint presentations here, I am afraid. This is about right-brained connecting – where you are engaging at an emotional level. 

If I think about the teachers that had the most impact on me, in a positive sense, were they the most technically brilliant ones, or were they the ones who made a real connection with me and, as a result, motivated me to learn? It is most certainly the latter category. 

So, if left-brained activity is where you spend your time, then watch out!

But, how easy is it to put these right? It is not complicated, complex or difficult – but the one thing you have to give is time!
