This is quite a sobering thought, isn’t it? If you really embraced this statement what difference would it make to what you are paying attention to today? Would you just continue doing what you are doing, or would you make some adjustments?
My bet is that you would make some changes to your day’s activity. The reason I am so confident in saying that is because we do not pay enough attention to what we are paying attention to – if you get my meaning!
Paying attention is not just about the “things” you are doing today, although it does include them, but it also includes those other things that you think about, worry about, get upset about, and other emotional experiences.
Remember there is a limit to the amount of time that you have on a daily basis to pay attention to.
You do not wake up every morning with a limitless amount of time to dispense to things you want attention paid to, so dispense it well. It is also worth remembering that we choose what we pay attention to – either consciously or unconsciously, but either way we choose.
So, choose carefully – what you pay attention to gets done and what you continue to pay attention to grows in importance in your life.
So, why is this important?
Well, if you are an entrepreneur, are you paying attention to the critical activities that will drive your business forward? If you are not, then no one else is! Are you certain that you are crystal clear about the 5/6 key drivers in your business? If not, determine them today and pay attention to them.
If you are a Senior Executive, are you paying attention to the delivery of your goals today, or are you just busy?
If you are a leader of your people, are you paying attention to your people and your team today? Are they motivated? Are they all focused on the right things? If, you don’t know, then you should.
How much time do we waste in paying attention to things that only hold us back?
Wow, but this is scary!! What about when we are angry with the boss over something he has just done, or how our partner has let us down or really teed us off, or the promotion we did not get (and we really deserved it!)!! How we put energy into paying attention to that! We go over and over it in our minds because we are so angry.
Guess what has just happened? We have used up some of our quota of todays attention – which we do not get back, and we have only succeeded in making the issue bigger and more irritating, hurtful or whatever. Have we achieved anything? Not at all – just wasted energy, and attention.
