Podcast #124: Stress IQ System and Journal Writing

Geoff Nicholson

Today’s guest in the Winning Teams Podcast is Geoff Nicholson who hails from Newcastle in the UK. He is the founder of GN coaching and the creator of Stress IQ, a system that combines stress management for success and life coaching strategies.

Geoff admits to not being any good at dealing with his emotions even as a young child. He didn’t talk about his issues and that may have led to one of the most life-changing experiences in his life.

In late 2000, Geoff experienced a series of illnesses which he thought nothing at first but progressed into him spending years housebound, in a wheelchair or mobility scooter and contemplating suicide.

However, Geoff had a weird moment of clarity that stop him from going through with it. Listen here to the full story.

Geoff decided then to get better and make sure that he’s always the best version of his self. He became fascinated about what makes people go from desperation to inspiration. What takes people from their darkest moment to actually flip their life over and build confidence, self-esteem, and worth?

Geoff doesn’t connect his illnesses to his inability to communicate his feelings rather; he thought of it as a chronic stress-related condition. Back then, he refused to talk about his issues and he reached that breaking point without proper release. His recovery resulted in him setting up GN coaching and creating the Stress IQ system.

In this episode, Geoff talks about:

  1. How Stress response effects both physically and mentally.
  2. How the Stress IQ system works.
  3. The concept of Stoicism Dichotomy of Control.
  4. A simple question that changed Geoff’s life, “What is it that I want to feel?” – don’t focus on things you don’t want to feel.
  5. The Significance of Journal Writing in Stress Management, and how to start.

Book Recommendation, Habits and Where to Get in Touch:

Geoff recommends the book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It’s an amazing book that he reads every year.

Geoff gets up in the morning and drinks a liter of water to keep him hydrated. He meditates for  5-10 minutes and then, start his journaling.

After, he goes in front of his mirror and does his affirmation to make sure he is in the right mindset to get on the day.

Geoff and his wife occasionally go on a nice walk, probably, 4 miles a day. Before sleeping, he dedicates 15-20 minutes planning for his activities the next day. He relaxes for a while and finally, sets his sleep tracker.
