Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the USA, said something many years ago that has always resonated with me:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent…..Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistent and determination alone are omnipotent.“
I love this quote because it reminds me that planning and strategising are all very important but they mean nothing if not supported by determined and persistent action.
It is also good to remind ourselves in these days of the “instant rewards” that persistence and determination are fundamental. It is all about committing to the necessary actions continuously and with a large dose of grit.
So, with apologies to no one, there is no such thing as the instant success – there is only real effort, activated on a daily basis, to do the mundane that is necessary to achieve the heights of success we aspire to.
I am grateful to Calvin Coolidge for this reminder. I haven’t come across a quote from the current President that I will try to live by!
