Are You Seen As An Authority In Your Field?

Authority

I got a flood of responses from my network in the last week, sending me the drafts of their vision and mission statements and I thoroughly enjoyed going through them. Thanks to everyone who sent me their material.

One of the interesting responses I got was from Lisa, who is the CEO of a recruitment business, and she asked a great question – how important is being seen as an authority in your field to the achievement of your vision?

It is a great question, and I thought it deserved to get a bit of air time here.

In my opinion, one of the greatest advantages of the web is the immediate access to experts. And that access is on a worldwide basis.

Previously, we relied on finding the expert in our local area – because that was all we really had access to, other than through books or videos.

Online accessibility has changed all that. I can now find the world experts on leadership, marketing, business processing, IT or any subject I want, just at my fingertips.

But, the real beauty is not only can I find them, in 99% of situations I can get access to them. Now, that is a wonderful opportunity.

So, how does that fit with the original question from Lisa about how important is it to be seen as an authority in your field?

Well, it fits big time! Because, with everyone having access to the best of the best, then the bar has been raised for everyone!

It is no longer enough to be an authority in your village or town, or even city! You are now being compared to the best of the best.

Now, let’s take a bit of a reality check – you do not have to be THE authority, but you must be AN authority!

So, what are you going to be an authority on? How are you going to position yourself? Are you brave enough to stick your neck out and “nail your colours to the mast” as you must if you want to be perceived as an authority?

Taking a position always means that others will disagree with you – that comes with being an authority!

Failing to position yourself as an authority can only guarantee that you will fit in with the bland and the unnoticed! Now, that is not where you want to reside!!

Those that are in the “bland and unnoticed” arena do not achieve visions that are exciting and meaningful.

Tell me – what do you aspire to be an authority on? Do, share it with me. Next week I will give you some strategies to help you make that happen.

In the meantime, share with me where you want to shine!!
